Plot
Marudheeran (Vijay) is the adopted son of a tribal village chief named Vembunathan. From a young age, he notices the atrocities regularly committed on the villagers by soldiers from the neighbouring kingdom of Vedhalapuram called the Vedhalams, who have supernatural powers. When he becomes an adult, Marudheeran starts to protect the villagers from the Vedhalams, because of which he is well respected by the villagers. Marudheeran falls in love with Pavalamalli (Shruti Haasan). And they both get married secretly and tells and takes blessings from Vembunathan. Vembunathan tells to visit temple before announcing their marriage to everyone. When Marudheeran is in temple, Pavalamalli is kidnapped by a group of Vedhalams, who then ransack the village and also kill Vembunathan. Marudheeran, along with his close friends Kodangi (Thambi Ramaiah) and Sama (Sathyan), begins a journey to Vedhalapuram.
During the journey, Marudheeran rescues Manthagini (Hansika Motwani), the princess of Vedhalapuram, from a panther. That time Princess Manthagini falls in love with Marudheeran. This is noticed by Thalapathy Jalatharangan (Sudeep), the evil-minded demon Commander-in-Chief of Vedhalapuram. On the pretext of being medicine makers, Marudheeran, Kodangi and Sama enter the Vedhalapuram palace, where they meet Yavanarani (Sridevi), the cruel Queen of Vedhalapuram who is also a sorceress.
Marudheeran realizes that he has some superpowers within him. He also learns that Yavanarani is not his real mother and that he was adopted by Vembunathan when he was a baby. He was born to King Pulivendhan (Vijay) and Queen Shenbagavalli (Shruti Haasan), who were former rulers of Vedhalapuram. Pulivendhan was Yavanarani's younger brother and was chosen by their father to rule over Vedhalapuram after his death due to his kind-heartedness. This enraged Yavanarani who joined hands with Jalatharangan to overthrow Pulivendhan and acquire his kingdom with the help of her dark magic.
Yavanarani turned Pulivendhan into a stone statue and also attempted to do the same to Shenbagavalli and her baby son Marudheeran. However, Shenbagavalli escaped with her son and sought refuge in Vembunathan's village. But she died after giving birth to her son due to injuries caused by Jalatharangan during her escape. Vembunathan adopted Marudheeran as his own son and raised him along with Pavalamalli.
Marudheeran also finds out that Pavalamalli is still alive and is being held captive by Yavanarani in her palace. He vows to rescue her and his father from Yavanarani's clutches. He also learns that he is the chosen one who can end Yavanarani's evil reign by destroying her magical device, the Vedhalam Kodai, which is the source of her power.
Marudheeran fights with Jalatharangan and kills him. He then confronts Yavanarani and destroys the Vedhalam Kodai. This breaks the spell on all the people who were turned into stone statues by Yavanarani, including Pulivendhan. Marudheeran reunites with his father and Pavalamalli. He also frees Manthagini from Yavanarani's control and tells her that he loves Pavalamalli. Manthagini understands and accepts his decision.
Yavanarani, who is weakened by the destruction of the Vedhalam Kodai, tries to kill Marudheeran with a poisoned arrow, but Pulivendhan sacrifices himself to save his son. Marudheeran then kills Yavanarani with his sword. The film ends with Marudheeran being crowned as the king of Vedhalapuram by the people and marrying both Pavalamalli and Manthagini.
